LFI: streets of NY and Istanbul
Nice new edition of LFI, Leica Fotografie International, with the streets of New York and the hidden clubs of Istanbul.
Some fifteen pages of street photography spanning the career of NY photographer Joel Meyerowitz (1938) make LFI more than worth buying. His early work in the sixties, observing and recording street life in the Big Apple, getting closer and closer to his subjects: “I was struggling at that time how to be in the moment. How close to get to somebody, how to understand the significance of the moment.” Now Meyerowitz’ work is in the collections of almost all the top photography musea in the world – and now a retrospective has opened in the German city of Düsseldorf, showing some 260 pieces produced during his 50 years of photography.
City life of quite a different nature is shown in the feature Dream Girls, shot by Giulio Rimondi. Rimondi follows the trans gender people of Istanbul during the 2014 ‘Miss Trans’ election in Istanbul. Over 10.000 people took part in the Trans Pride Parade 2014 in this city with a religious-conservative City Government.
