032C: Cate Blanchett in SM gear from a Ai Weiwei tree
Reasons enough to read the 24th issue of 032c, fashion and design magazine that proclaims itself ‘a manual for freedom, research and creativity’.
First of all the features: the story of Nicolas Ghesquiere, for 15 years Balenciaga’s creative director, before het left the company to do… Yeah, to do what exactly? More than 30 pages are dedicated to him, with photo’s of his work and of his muse Charlotte Gainsbourg. Then there is an interview with writer, moviemaker and philosopher Werner Herzog (‘I am not an artist, I am a soldier’), who recently bequeathed his entire archive to the Deutsche Kinematek in Berlijn. And there is a nice piece on Dennis Freedman, once creative director at W Magazine, now employed by Barney New York.
But even more fascinating than the written word is the photography in this issue. The fashion shoots, of course. But also other photography: the close up of a dromedare. Madonna on a table with her leg in her neck. Topless Kate Moss slipping two fingers in her panties while holding a tea cup in het other hand. And, Cate Blanchett in SM gear hanging from… a Ai WeiWei tree.
This must be art.
