Novum, Novo Typo and more excellent design

 

Out now: Novum, World of Graphic Design, issue 2, 2013. As fresh and international as always, with Helsinki’s Bond Creative Agency and Paris’ Marylene Scheepers in the showroom section. And with a very informing special on infographics, Novum Plus. With designers Ole Häntszschel, Thomas Strobel from Germany, TRIK from The Netherlands, art director Francesco Franchi from Italy’s financial newspaper IL and editor Hermann Gummer form Vienna.

But our heart was stolen by the Novo Typo Design Studio, fontmakers from Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Founded by Mark van Wageningen in January 2012, with a typographic philosophy that is almost a manifesto: ‘We like to make “imperfect” typefaces. In a technical way everything should be perfectly set, but in the design of the typeface, we like to add some imperfection, irregularity and disorder in the shapes of our characters. We think perfect is a little bit dull …

Well, nature combines both perfection and imperfection – Novo Typo’s font based on it is just beautiful.
